Fun and Free Things to Do in Singapore

  1. Arab Street
My first time to roam around Arab Street (after living in Singapore for almost seven years) was an amazing experience (although the weather was really bad). The vibrant colours of the shops will definitely thrill you too! Start by taking a picture in front of Sultan Mosque, follow the path and have fun!

How to get to Arab Street: Take the MRT (East West Line or Downtown Line) and get off at Bugis Station. Take Exit C. Head northeast on Victoria Street towards Ophir Road. Turn right onto Arab Street.

  1. Chinatown
I first knew about Chinatown when I was looking for affordable souvenir items I could bring home. I then found myself enjoying the lively view. It is a bustling business district which is also the home of Sri Mariamman Temple, the oldest Hindu temple in Singapore and the Buddha Tooth Relic Temple. Give yourself a treat too and try the different variety of local foods gluttonously at the Chinatown Food Street!

How to get to Chinatown: Take the MRT and alight at Chinatown Station (North East Line or Downtown Line). Take Exit A.

  1. Gardens by the Bay
According to Wikipedia, “Gardens by the Bay is an integral part of a strategy by the Singapore government to transform Singapore from a "Garden City" to a "City in a Garden". The stated aim is to raise the quality of life by enhancing greenery and flora in the city.

You shouldn’t miss Gardens by the Bay when you are in Singapore. There you can find the massive “supertrees”, the design of which resembles the country’s national flower.

How to get to Gardens by the Bay: Take the MRT and get off at Bayfront Station (Circle Line). Take Exit B and follow the underpass to Gardens by the Bay.

  1. Helix Bridge and Marina Bay Sands Ground
Enjoy the Central Business District’s view from the pedestrian bridge connecting Marina Centre with Marina South in the Marina Bay area. Through the bridge, you can also catch a sight of the Singapore Flyer, a giant observation wheel.

How to get to Helix Bridge: Take the MRT and get off at Esplanade Station (Circle Line). Take the exit to Raffles Avenue (there are heaps of signs so you wouldn’t get lost!). Walk straight to the Youth Olympic Park and then turn right.

  1. Clarke Quay
Clarke Quay is a riverside quay in Singapore with various restaurants where you can enjoy free music and have fun. You may also take pleasure in watching the lively colours of the river cruises and river taxis along the Singapore River at night. If you are a party animal, you shouldn’t miss it for the world because today, Clarke Quay has become known as the hub of Singapore nightclubs.

How to get to Clarke Quay: Take the MRT and get off at Clarke Quay Station (North East Line). Take Exit C to Boat Quay.

  1. Sentosa Island
Sentosa is a very popular island resort in Singapore. Every year, more than twenty million people visit the island. It is the home of a number of attractions including Universal Studios Singapore. There are a lot of fun and free activities that you can do in the island like swimming at Sentosa’s artificial beaches or just by simply roaming around the island by foot! For more information about the island, you may check the website here

How to get to Sentosa Island (for free until December 31, 2015): Take the MRT and get off at Harbourfront Station (North East Line). Stroll from VivoCity Shopping Mall’s water promenade and make way to the Sentosa Board Walk.

  1. Singapore Botanic Gardens
For nature lovers like me, you should definitely visit the Singapore Botanic Gardens. Recently, it was honoured as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. It offers a lot of attraction such as the National Orchid Garden, Ginger Garden and the Rainforest.

How to get to Singapore Botanic Gardens: Take the MRT and get off at Botanic Gardens (Circle Line). Follow the path and the signs!

  1. Merlion Park
According to wikipedia, the Merlion is the national personification of Singapore. This is one of the most popular tourist attractions in the country. And this is also the reason why you shouldn’t miss the chance to visit the Merlion Park when you visit Singapore! Admire the bay, be artistic and take some wacky shots with the Merlion – it’s a must! During night time, the Merlion Park also has the best view to experience Wonder Full - a free light and water show at Promenade’s event plaza (Marina Bay Sands).

How to get to Merlion Park:  Take the MRT and get off at Raffles Place Station (East West Line). Take Exit B towards The Fullerton Bay Hotel. Head North towards Fullerton Road.

  1. Fountain of Wealth
In 1998, The Fountain of Wealth was listed by the Guinness Book of Records as the largest fountain in the world. Some people think though that the Fountain of Wealth is overrated. In case you are in the area, you may consider squeezing it into your itinerary. It is advisable to come and visit during night time because laser shows are also available at certain times.

How to get to the Fountain of Wealth: Take the MRT and get off at Esplanade Station (Circle Line). Take Exit A to Suntec City. Follow the signs!

Happy travels!
